Useful little things

Five minutes to guest-ready

The spare roll should not be a treasure hunt. A practical reset with no hotel budget required.

Start with the next person’s experience

Imagine entering the room for the first time. Can you see toilet paper, soap and something clean to dry your hands with? Is there a bin where it makes sense? Can you understand the lock? Those questions are more useful than whether the towels match a social-media photograph.

Clear one useful surface

A small shelf or the edge of a basin becomes unusable when it carries every bottle in the house. Move personal products to a labelled container or another room. Leave space for a guest’s glasses or belongings. Keep the path to the door, toilet and basin clear, including for anyone using a mobility aid.

Put replacements within reach

Choose a reachable place for spare rolls. It need not be an expensive dispenser: a simple shelf or basket may do. Avoid locations where splashes or leaks will soak the paper. Do not make guests climb, reach around sharp fittings or balance on a stool to find an essential.

Finish with a simple reset

Check the room, empty a full bin and put out a clean hand towel. Follow the instructions on your own cleaning products and fittings. A scented item is optional; guests may prefer an unscented space. Never mix cleaning products. The purpose is an easy-to-use room, not a perfume contest.

Check what you cannot see in a photograph

The lock should release reliably from inside. Lighting should be usable, and any electrical equipment must suit its location. If something is broken, get appropriate help rather than hiding it behind a joke sign. A short note explaining an unusual flush is reasonable; an apology for a faulty fixture is not a repair.

Your five-minute checklist

Paper visible. Soap available. Clean drying option. Clear route. Bin checked. Private belongings put away. Add any access needs your guest has told you about. Our planner offers a reusable guest checklist so you do not have to start from memory each time.
